Getting There
Fly to Cancun
(approximately 4 hours from the Northeast), then
take a taxi or arrange for a van pick-up to Puerto Morelos. Driving
time is approximately 20 minutes. Mexican time is one hour behind
the East Coast.
Documents
You must
bring proof of your American citizenship. A current passport
is required. Children
traveling without one or both parents must have a notarized
letter in which the absent parent authorizes the trip to Mexico.
When you arrive
in Mexico, you will receive an Immigration Slip. Save this, as
you will need it to leave Mexico. No shots are required.
Getting Around
Taxis
at the airport are government regulated, and a trip to Puerto
Morelos costs about $ 55 US. The price is fixed, and drivers
will not haggle. For the return trip, you can get a local taxi
to the airport for approximately $ 20. You can also get a bus
from the airport to Puerto Morelos for approximately $ 5. Information
is available at the airport. For four or more people arriving
together, van pick-up can be arranged.

Bicycles,
cars, and vans are available for rent in Puerto Morelos by the
day or by the week.
Directions
by car to your hotel from Cancun: Take Highway 307 South from
Cancun or the airport. Turn left at Puerto Morelos sign (approx.
20 miles) and continue to the main square. The Amar Inn will
be on your right at the end of a large, open square.
Currency
Currency
in Mexico is based on the peso (approx. 11 Pesos to 1 U.S.
Dollar in August 2007- check out current
exchange).
Money or traveller's checks can be easily exchanged at kiosks
that are
open 7 days
a week
until
9 pm.
In Puerto
Morelos
credit cards are not widely accepted, but there is an ATM
in the main square.
What
to Bring
We recommend
traveling light, but we also suggest that you bring the following:
- Light,
casual clothes (average temperature is 82)
- sweatshirt
or sweater, in case it's cool
- beach
towel (hotels provide room towels only)
- hat (a
visor does not protect the top of the head)
- sunscreen...high
SPF
- comfortable
walking shoes and / or Teva type land/water shoes
- flashlight
- day pack
- lightweight
snorkeling equipment (or you can rent from local outfitters...
there's a fabulous reef not far from shore).
