About Thea
I began studying yoga in Boston in 1979 with Carol Nelson and started teaching in 1982 at her studio, Creative Yoga. My teaching style is Iyengar-based; focusing on alignment in each posture using a gentle, hands-on style and the lovely, melodious Sanskrit names for the postures. Yoga props help all students find ease and comfort in each pose.
The study of yoga has been an integral part of my practice. Carol and I lived and studied together for a month at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India in 1987 with Mr. Iyengar, his daughter Geeta and son Prashant. I continue to take classes with Judith Lasater, whose influential book Relax and Renew: Restorative Yoga informs my integrating restorative & therapuetic yoga in each class.
About Classes
A typical class consists of warming up with pranayama (breath awareness) and gentle stretching, followed by more active postures such as standing, backbending, twisting, and balancing, then cooling postures, such as seated and restorative poses, ending with a guided full-body relaxation. Modification of postures to accommodate all students is essential, so use of bolsters, blocks, straps, blankets, sandbags and eyebags is taught. mI welcome all students, whether you are new to yoga or are an adept yogi. One class per semester is dedicated to restorative postures as I believe these quiet, calming poses are necessary in our stressful culture.
